It's a lovely story, except for the glaring error in the type of aircraft. Even assuming that we're going back in time quite a few years to when they were in common use, a DC9 is a short to medium-range airliner. There is no way that it could do an eight hour flight from Sydney to Manila - it wouldn't get much past halfway.
