Family Bonds Ch. 03: Hannah

We got dressed, and I started to set up for sanding the floor in the guest room. Hauled out all the furniture, took pictures off the wall, etc. After I got the sander and a few other things into the room, I sealed the door with painters tape, both from the inside and the outside. The first time I sanded the floor of one of the rooms, the whole house was covered in dust, even though I kept the door closed. This would keep the dust out of the rest of the house.

I had just started taping the outside of the door, when Emily (finally) finished editing the clip, and sent it to our family group chat. I stopped to watch it. It was even hotter than the raw footage had been. I stopped the sander, went outside, dusted off as best I could, threw some water in my face, and went back inside. Lunch was great! No snarky comments, uncomfortable silences, or weird glances. Unfortunately, I was the bottleneck on the bedroom project, and I had to get back to the sander if we were going to finish getting the floor ready that day.

I sanded for 4 more hours straight, with just a few breaks for water and to change the sanding discs. I was lucky that the floor in the guest room was less worn down, so the sanding job went a lot faster than I'd expected. I wouldn't need a second day of sanding.

As soon as I was finished, I spent another hour and a half vacuuming and wiping down the walls, to remove as much of the dust as possible. We'd have to clean again before we coated the floor, but this got about 99% of the dust. Finally, I removed the painter's tape from the door.

I was wiped out. The sander and the vacuum were loud and heavy to move around. The noise, vibration and the unwieldiness of the sander made it hard work.

I quickly showered again, to get rid of all the dust. Afterwards, I went to the living room, plopped into the couch, turned on the TV, and fell asleep within a few minutes.

Mom woke me up. It was dark out. I must have been asleep for several hours.

"Time for dinner, dear." Mom was shaking my shoulder very gently.

As the fogginess of sleep slowly started to dissipate, I realized I was hungry.

"Woah, I must've passed out. Thanks, Mom."

She leaned down and kissed me tenderly on the cheek. "Come on, sleepyhead," she whispered. "Let's eat!"

As I sat on the couch, rubbing my eyes, it struck me suddenly that our lives would be very different from now on.
