"I'm naming you Bast," I said. "After a very friendly cat who was there for me when I needed a friend. Welcome to the family." I turned to the attendant. "Thanks for all of your help."
"That's fine," said the girl. She smiled down at the newly-named Bast. "Just make sure you take good care of her, will you? We get a lot of- huh?"
"What?" I said as the girl frowned and bent down low.
"It's nothing," she said. "I could have sworn she just...huh. Huh. I guess." She stepped away, blinking, before turning to me and smiling. "You won't believe what your cute little kitten just told me..."
