Sorry but, though I'm reasonably intelligent, I'm just not getting the reason or purpose of the they/them bit ref Kam. Did I miss something? Actually, I'm sure I must have. Would someone explain, please? Aside from that the storyline is quite clever.
For anonymous who asked, Kam was established to use they/them pronouns on the previous chapter.
Chapter 3: "Oh, and I should mention," Dana added, "Kam goes by 'they' and 'them,' just so you know."
This would imply they probably identify as genderqueer or non-binary. Here are a few useful links on the matter:
